George Glenn Waltz passed away at home in Rockville, Ind., on March 28 at the age of 94. He was the second of three children born to Glenn and Eloise (George) Waltz on the farm in Monroe Township near Madison, Ind., on Aug. 24, 1927. He married Dorothy Everly on Nov. 25, 1954, in Owen Co, Ind. 

He helped his father on the farm raise tobacco, vegetables, livestock and crops. He graduated from Purdue University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture. He was a founding member of Farmhouse Fraternity at Purdue.

Waltz began his career by teaching agriculture to veterans in New Albany. From there he worked for the Farm Bureau Co-op developing poultry raising operations in Owen County. He began working for Purdue Extension after his marriage and served in Decatur, Knox and Ripley counties. He earned a master’s degree from Purdue in 1958. He was promoted to Parke County Extension agent in 1963 and served in that role until 1990. His special interests were agronomy, farm management and community development.

Some of the things he was instrumental in establishing during his time in Parke County were the Parke County Maple Fair, Billie Creek Village, the Parke County Industrial Committee, and the building of the new Extension office at the fairgrounds. After retirement, he remained active in real estate and farm management.

Surviving are his four children, James Waltz (Debbie), of Brookville, Ohio, Dr. Steven Waltz (Elaine), of Rockville, Sharon Hackett (Joe), of Louisville, Ky., and Miriam Waltz, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; brother, Don Waltz (Sandy), of Seymour; sister, Marjorie Davis, of Muncie; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces, nephews their spouses and children.

A time of remembrance was held April 2 at Gooch Funeral Home, Rockville. The family will celebrate his life at the homeplace farm in Madison later this summer.
