Abundance of red clover can be caused by several factors

 I have been asked by quite a few people this year why some pastures have so much red clover. In a few fields, it almost looks like someone went out and seeded them, even though no red clover has been planted there for years. Other fields nearby may have very little.

Viable seed was certainly present, either in the soil seed bank or from more recent seed production. Red clover produces a percentage of hard seed with a water-resistant seed coat, so it does not germinate all at once. Some seed may remain dormant until natural weathering or abrasion makes the seed coat permeable enough to take in water and germinate.

The seed bank should not be thought of as just leftover seed from the last time the field was intentionally planted. It is probably a mixture from several generations. Clover planted years ago may have produced plants that later bloomed and made new seed. Volunteer plants may also have quietly produced seed during years when grazing, mowing and weather allowed it. Some of that seed germinated fairly soon, while some entered the soil seed bank and, if it remained viable, waited for another opportunity.

The red clover showing up this year may, therefore, be the offspring of clover planted many years ago, or the offspring of several generations that followed it. The seed bank is not just an old account being slowly drawn down. It is replenished whenever enough red clover is allowed to mature and produce viable seed.

Still, seed in the soil is only potential. It does not explain why some fields are loaded with clover this year while others are not. For a red clover seedling to become part of the pasture, several things must line up. There has to be enough moisture, suitable temperature, reasonable seed-to-soil contact, adequate light and less competition from established plants.

Some fields may have experienced more hoof traffic last fall or through winter. Others may have been grazed a little closer, fed on, opened by winter injury or simply thinned. Much of Indiana and the Midwest were also fairly dry during late summer and fall of last year, which reduced forage regrowth in many pastures. Depending on when a paddock was last grazed and how much recovery occurred afterward, some fields may have gone into winter with a thinner, more open grass canopy and less competition. A tiny red clover seedling does not need an acre of bare ground. It only needs a small opening where light reaches the soil surface, and the surrounding grasses are not immediately using all the available moisture.

Reduced competition may be just as important as disturbance. A seed can germinate beneath a dense grass canopy and disappear without anyone ever noticing it. Established grasses already have crowns, roots and leaves in place, while a new clover seedling starts with almost nothing. If the grass closes over it too quickly, the seedling may lose the competition for light before it develops enough root system to compete.

This year appears to have provided a perfect storm of opportunity in some fields. The seed was present, dry fall conditions combined with grazing and field history left a more open canopy in places reducing competition, and spring moisture and temperatures allowed more plants than usual to establish or existing plants to become more noticeable.

What we see this summer is probably a mixture of new seedlings, plants established in recent years and older surviving crowns. Red clover is considered a short-lived perennial, but that does not mean it disappears after one season. Individual plants may persist for several years depending on variety, disease pressure, weather, soil conditions and grazing management.

If rainfall and temperature were the only reasons for this year’s abundance, nearly every pasture would look similar, but they do not. One field may have had plenty of seed but remained too dense for seedlings to survive. Another may have been disturbed but lacked much viable red clover seed. A third may have had both seed and openings but dried out at the wrong time. The fields with abundant clover probably had all the pieces come together. A volunteer red clover year is not caused by seed alone. It happens when seed, soil contact, disturbance, reduced competition, moisture, temperature and timing all show up together.

In pastures where red clover is abundant, it may be worthwhile to allow at least a few plants or small areas to bloom and produce mature seed. That does not mean letting every pasture get rank or sacrificing forage quality across the whole farm. Even scattered seed-producing plants can help replenish the soil seed bank and provide another generation for future years.

Red clover is valuable forage. It improves diet quality, contributes nitrogen, fills spaces between grasses and performs well under rotational grazing. It can also help dilute some of the animal-performance problems associated with endophyte-infected tall fescue.

Still, a good red clover year should not be taken for granted. Disease, drought, close grazing, excessive grass competition and failure to produce new seed can all reduce the stand. Graze it, but do not repeatedly graze it into the ground. Leave at least four inches of mixed grass-clover residual going into winter, avoid unnecessary nitrogen where clover is already plentiful and allow a little seed production where practical.

This year’s abundance is a good reminder that pastures often contain more potential than we realize. The seed may have been waiting in the soil for years, but this happened to be the year the door opened. Sometimes we improve a pasture by planting something new. Other times, good management simply gives what is already there the opportunity to grow.

It is not about maximizing a single grazing event but about optimizing the entire grazing season. Keep on grazing.
