ISDA rolls out new dairy strategic plan
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) has announced a strategic plan to increase dairy business expansion, development and attraction to the state.
The Jan. 28 announcement came as an update to the 2015 Indiana dairy strategic plan. Lt. Gov. and Indiana Ag Secretary Suzanne Crouch, ISDA Director Bruce Kettler, the Indiana Dairy Strategy steering committee members, advisory members and other agriculture industry leaders were present for the press conference announcing the plan.

Flap Jacks, Hot Cakes, Griddle Cakes, Pan Cakes, no matter what you call them, they have a long, proud history in the food world. Scientists have discovered that pan cakes were even popular among early hunters and gatherers. The lore of cowboy breakfasts and Shrove Tuesday pancake suppers alike, were also a favorite on Greek and Roman tables. For the Greeks and Roman diners, honey was the topping of choice, while later Elizabethan dinners favored theirs with spices, rosewater, sherry and apples. Pan Cakes even made their way to the presidential table of Thomas Jefferson, made by pouring thin batter onto a hot griddle. But unlike pan cakes on today’s tables, pan cakes in colonial times did not have a leavening agent, making them lighter and thinner.

Once obscure, pawpaws slowly gaining attention of producers
ATHENS, Ohio – Mark and Helena Grismore, of Athens, call themselves small producers, dabbling in roughly three acres of cucumbers, hot peppers, tomatoes and onions. But each September, many in Athens County flock to the Grismore farm and head to the couples’ pawpaw orchard. There they find 50 pawpaw trees over seven acres.
