BOAH names assistant director of Meat and Poultry Inspection</p><p> INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The latest addition to the staff of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) is David Bough, DVM, as assistant director of the Meat and Poultry Inspection Division.</p><p> Bough (pronounced “boo”) comes to BOAH with more than 25 years of experience in private veterinary practice, most of those at the Lafayette Veterinary Hospital. The Terre Haute, Ind., native is a graduate of Purdue University’s College of Agriculture’s Animal Sciences program and College of Veterinary Medicine.</p><p> While his career has focused primarily on small animal medicine, Bough is excited about the shift to the food animal sector and the opportunity to apply his clinical skills to working with meat inspectors and processors to ensure a safe food supply.</p><p> Indiana is one of 27 states that operate a state-inspected meat and poultry inspection program. By federal law, the standards for state-inspected facilities must be equal to those inspected by the USDA. BOAH will inspect more than 87.5 million pounds of meat and poultry products annually, which are processed in 130 state-inspected facilities.</p><p> Information about BOAH and the Meat and Poultry Inspection Program is online at www.boah.in.gov</p><p> NSR seeking junior activities coordinator</p><p> WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The National Swine Registry (NSR) is seeking to fill the newly created position of junior activities coordinator.</p><p> This position is responsible for, but not limited to, organizing and carrying out all National Junior Swine Association (NJSA) regional shows and the NBS Jr. Barrow Classic. The junior activities coordinator will also co-manage the World Pork Expo Junior National and contribute to the planning of the National Junior Summer Spectacular.</p><p> The junior activities coordinator will be responsible for processing all show entries and leadership conference applications. In addition, they will oversee the Mentors Value People (MVP) program and NJSA promotions at the national FFA convention. LOUIS, Mo. — William S. “Bill” Schuermann has joined the ASA staff as executive director, Member & Industry Relations.</p><p> Schuermann most recently served as group publisher-Fruit and Vegetable Group for Meister Media Worldwide in Willoughby, Ohio, where he was responsible for three of the company’s specialty ag publications. Many in the agribusiness industry may know him best for his work at Doane, LLC, based in St. Louis, where he was senior vice president, Economic Advisory and Information Services, and publisher and editorial director for Agri Marketing magazine. He has had additional sales and marketing management experience with Ball Seed Co. and DeKalb-Pfizer Genetics.</p><p> He will be responsible for leading the ASA staff and organization in communications, industry relations, marketing and membership, and will maintain and develop strategic alliances with agribusiness and allied industries, serve as ASA’s top manager and liaison for the Commodity Classic and provide direction to meet the objectives of ASA’s Agribusiness Council.</p><p> Schuermann has a B.S. degree in Economics from Iowa State University and an M.S. degree in Agricultural Economics/Agribusiness Management from Ohio State University.</p><p> OSU professor recognized as Fellow</p><p> COLUMBUS, Ohio — Steven Schwartz, professor of food science and technology in Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, has been recognized for his work by being named as a Fellow of the American Assoc. for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).</p><p> Schwartz, who has published more than 140 peer-reviewed publications, was chosen as a fellow of AAAS for his distinguished contributions to the field of food chemistry and health, particularly antioxidants and other components related to chronic disease, oxidative stress, bio-availability and cancer. He collaborates with other food scientists, plant breeders, medical researchers and other professionals to examine the health effects of components in tomatoes, soy, berries and cruciferous vegetables.</p><p> Schwartz credits much of the progress of his lab to an uncommon collaboration between his team and that of Dr. Steven Clinton, Ohio State professor of hematology and oncology and leader of the Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention Program.</p><p> Mark Failla, professor and chair of the Department of Human Nutrition, and Clinton are key players in an interdisciplinary research center that Schwartz leads, the Center for Advanced Functional Foods Research and Entrepreneurship. Several products it has developed are currently in clinical trials. </p><p> In addition, Schwartz leads the Center for Advanced Processing and Packaging Studies (CAPPS), designed to conduct industy relevant research to advance new technologies within the food industry. |
