Put the cherries with their juice, the cornstarch and the 1 cup sugar into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Mix together the flour, salt and baking powder. Then add the beaten egg and enough milk to make the batter moist.
Mix this batter, then drop spoons of it into the boiling sauce and cook it uncovered for 10 minutes. Next, cover the pan and cook for another 10 minutes.
Dip the dumplings and the cherry sauce from the cooking pan, and place it in an individual dessert dish for serving.
