4 cups beef broth
1 cup apple juice
1 apple, unpeeled, cored and quartered
3 tablespoons chopped sweet onion
1 clove garlic, peeled and sliced
4 bay leaves
3 sprigs fresh thyme, or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
