Ribbon cut at new 4-H center

COLUMBUS, Ohio — More than 400 visitors gathered on Friday, April 4, at the official grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center.

“This building is for you,” Bobby Moser, vice president and dean of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, told the crowd of youths, friends, volunteers, faculty and staff.
Attending the event were descendents of A.B. Graham, the founder of 4-H, as well as family members of other early 4-H leaders. Moser thanked U.S. Rep. David Hobson, whose home district includes Graham’s home city of Springfield, for being a strong proponent of the center’s environmental features and for helping to secure federal funds to support them.

“It’s a great day for this university and for Ohio’s young people,” said Hobson, adding that he hoped the new center will demonstrate that green buildings are economically feasible. “This is a building that will sell itself,” Hobson said. “It shows that we should be looking at this kind of technology for the future.”

The 46,000-square-foot center has applied for certification in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program of the United States Green Building Council (http://www.usgbc.org)
Its features include a geothermal heating and cooling system; plumbing fixtures designed to use 52 percent less water than conventional fixtures; and extensive use of natural lighting and recycled materials.
