Acts 12:5 “So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.”

Some Bible stories stay with us for a lifetime. The account of Peter’s miraculous escape from prison in Acts 12 is one of those stories. Not only did God demonstrate His power to advance the gospel despite human opposition, but He did so in answer to His people’s prayers, even though they didn’t recognize His answer at first.

The gospel was spreading rapidly throughout Jerusalem. Lives were being transformed, but not everyone rejoiced over what God was doing. King Herod, determined to persecute the growing church, arrested several believers and even had James executed. When he saw that the Jewish religious leaders approved of his actions, he arrested Peter as well.

Yet while Peter sat chained in a prison cell under heavy guard, the church was earnestly praying for him.

Unbeknownst to the praying believers, God sent an angel to rescue Peter. A brilliant light filled the prison cell as the angel woke Peter and his chains fell from his wrists.

Still groggy, Peter obeyed the angel’s instructions to get dressed and followed him out of the prison. The guards slept on as the iron gate opened by itself, allowing Peter to walk out into the darkness a free man.

At the end of the street, the angel suddenly disappeared, and Peter came to his senses. He realized that the Lord had sent the angel to rescue him from the evil plans of those who opposed the gospel.

After collecting his thoughts, Peter made his way to the house of Mary. Even though it was late into the night, believers were gathered there praying for him. 

When Peter knocked, a servant girl came to answer the door. The moment she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overwhelmed with joy that she forgot to open the gate. Instead, she ran back inside to tell everyone that Peter was standing outside.

But no one believed her. Meanwhile, Peter kept knocking.

Finally, they opened the door and stood speechless as Peter stood before them in the flesh.

After explaining how the Lord had rescued him, Peter left Mary’s house to stay somewhere out of harm’s way.

What an incredible reminder of God’s sovereignty and power! Nothing and no one could stop His plans then, and nothing can stop them now.

Like the believers in Jerusalem, we have the privilege of participating in what God is doing when we faithfully bring our requests to Him. God answers prayer, often in ways we never expect. Even when we cannot see Him at work, we can trust that He hears every prayer and is already accomplishing His perfect will.
