Excavator unearthed a $56,000 bid at Sykora estate sale

ELKTON, Mich. – On June 14, Michigan’s Sykora Auction Services conducted a living estate sale for Glenn Craig. Included in the sale was Craig’s lifetime collection of John Deere tractors along with other equipment, tools and farm smalls.
The smalls were sold onsite during the morning, followed by an online auction via Proxibid of 63 lots that included the tractors, equipment, tools and farm accouterments. Bidders were able to inspect items the previous Saturday.
The auction’s highest bid of $56,000 went to a 2011 Komatsu PC78US excavator. The unit, with 2,690 hours featured a cab with heat, rubber pads, pattern selector, and Munroto Qwick Tach. Immediately after, an AIM 60-inch dig bucket was auctioned, garnering another $1,600.
Spotlighted in the auction were seven John Deere tractors. The top bid for a Deere tractor went to an older restored 1948 Model D that grabbed $9,000. The running-condition unit featured hand start, Fairbanks J magneto, DLTX-63 carb, and new Goodyear 16.9x30” tires, but no PTO.
The 1948 was followed by a 1949 Model D that went for $6,750. It was also an older restoration in running condition, with an electric start and new 14.9x30” tires. After that, a mostly original 1948 Model D, and a 1974 Model 1530-DSL 2-wheel drive utility tractor, each went for $6,500. A bidder got a bargain at $2,200 for a nicely restored and running 1937 Model L wide-front, with newer rubber.
The auction also featured an Allis Chalmers Model G tractor from the late 1940s-1950s. It had a Briggs gas-conversion engine and a hydro with MTD 1-row cultivator. It reached $1,600. Later, a mostly complete Model G “take out” engine with manual transmission sold for $325.
Other pieces of farm equipment included a Countyline 6’ 3-point rear rototiller that bid to $1,800, a Swedish tine 3-point field digger that caught a modest $650, and a vintage Ellis Manufacturing 3-point, 1-row mechanical transplanter that went for just $100.
Equipment offerings continued with four lots with commercial mowing gear. Among the pieces, a Walker 26-hp. zero-turn lawn mower with only 403 hours that hit $4,300. It had a gas engine, 72-inch front deck, and 2-cylinder powered hydro. A King Kutter 3-point, 6-foot rotary mower, with 540 PTO came in at $1,100, while a 3-point converted John Deere #5 sickle mower got only $200.
Four lots with irrigation equipment were offered near the auction’s end. A pallet of 3-4 inch irrigation fittings sold for $20. Three Rainbird irrigation guns were picked up for $10 each.
Three trailers were also available, with two bidding in the $4,000 range. An American 20-foot tandem-axle aluminum trailer picked up $4,800. The garage-kept unit had 2-foot slide-in ramps, wood decking, and removable fenders. Snagged for $4,000 was a garage-kept Sure-Trac 10-foot-by-62-inch tandem-axle dump trailer, with a new battery, and 12-volt hydraulics.
Shop tools had a nice presence, with a dozen lots available. A 220-volt Grizzly G0-4542 20-inch wood planer with a spiral cutter head landed $2,000. Next came a 220-volt Grizzly G-1023SL 10-inch left-tilting table saw, won for $750. An older drill press mounted on a small table went for just $50.
The auction wrapped up with various lots of parts for tractors and farm equipment. The items included an Electric Wheel Company 760-A running gear, purchased for $375. A lot containing four MTD 9.5L-15 tires went for $100; another tire lot, with four 11L-15 MTDs, got $60. And, for someone who could use them, a set of seven trailer house axles rolled off for just $50.
